Community Service Learning 10/20

Community Service Learning

This quarter in Fall of 08 I take two ICS (Intercultural Studies). One of assignment is about community service learning. For this class the community service learning requirement will be fulfilled through your participation in a team made up of you and some of you classmates that will work together with organizations based both on and off campus. On October 20, there was an event called “SFJ-student for justice!” on campus. I met Jane who was there in early time and she helped me folded the fly and I tried to say “Hi” to know other people who has involved this event. Around 12:30pm, the speakers went after on the stage to express their voice for “2008 California State Propositions”. There were two “Prop 4 & Prop 8” quiet defends. I would hear different opinions with “Pro and Con” at that moment. Prop 4 – “Parental Notification and Waiting Period for Abortions” and Prop 8- “Constitutional Amendment Banning Gay Marriage” Some people agree with it. Others do not. In my point of view, I feel the freedom is everywhere. Besides, I could see Asian American who can show their voice on the stage no matter or whatever they said. It presents that Asian American are not only silent but more and more voice and right and justice.
By the way, Jane and I ran into our instructor in this event. Hopefully he can give us high score…haa!

Interview Pastor Dan for ICS 20

Interview Pastor Dan (Intercultural Studies)

This quarter I take two Intercultural Studies that one of assignment is to find someone who is immigrant and cultural and background is similar to me. The first person jump into my mind is Pastor Dan.

Introduction:
My subject is my Pastor, Daniel Cheng who has Taiwanese background is immigrant to United State when he was teenager. Later on, for God’s sake, he went back Taiwan to finish School of China Evangelical School in Taipei, Taiwan. He married his wife Charlene, Taiwanese and has tow daughters, first generation in U.S. He has been serving of Christianity at Canaan Taiwanese Christian Church over sixteen years at Mountain View, California. In this Church, there are three services classified into three languages: English, Taiwanese, and Mandarin. I am interested in that wheat’s the vision of him for God’s sake to come to United Sates? What’s feeling as an immigrant in U.S? How does he interact with these people who are immigrant from Taiwan and ABSs, ABTs 2nd-3rd generation? I am looking forward to seeing the new perspective of his own.

In conclusion, after interview with Pastor Dan, I deeply feel we need to renew our mind (Romans 12:2) to use different perspective views to see this country once we start to choose to settle down. Some of thoughts are supposed to update. For example, personally, I can not often thing of past where I lived in Taiwan instead of updating my mind in positive way when I am living in this land so that I may know how to adjust to live here. The benefit is good for me to reduce discrimination in order to assimilation. I can live more health and enjoy the freedom. Meanwhile, I have to improve my English that will be helpful to communicate with people in diversity. They may understand what my thought or emotion is through my behavior when they interact or communicate with me. Another important thing is the vote is very important for Asian American who can have more chance to present our “voice” in this country. Finally, through the Bible saying “We are children of His own”, there is no special distinction before His presence. Needless to day, we have to love each other without racism as we live on the earth under the “Heaven.”

##I got the score of 44/50 (50)

10/11/08 Link Observatory

10/11/08 Observatory@_@

After visiting Jasmine, eon and I went to observatory, located on East San Jose. The fist time I saw the 36-inch and 120 inch telescopes. I was so excited, and gained a little bit of knowledge of telescope... three mirror reflectors... Thank God! We had a lot of fun although the weather was chilly@_@

"I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. 2 My soul will boast in the LORD; let eh afflicted hear and rejoice. 3 Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together." (Psalm34: 1-3)

10/11/08 visiting Jasmine...

Dear LORD,

Thank you very much for your caring and grace! Thank you so much to use eon and I to care for Jasmine and her family. Thank you for keeping the friendship with Jasmine and me. I am happy to see her son who is so cute and healthy. I thank you that I can share my testimony with Jasmine's father, we can sing a praise song to Jasmine and we can talk with Jasmine's father. LORD, thank you. May you continually do your good work on them with your love! Thank you! In Jesus name, Amen.

10/11/08 visiting Jasmine...
We were joyful to visit Jasmine Chen and we visited her son, Brian Ho and her father and mother who come from China. We shared Psalm 23, praying, testimony with her father and Jasmine. By faith, we sang a song together.
I wish Jasmine can bring her father to join our Music Event this Saturday night.

On the other hand, I felt I need to improve myself not to talk to much.. haa so as to allow eon to talk more... Thanks eon's reminding. I liked eon's to evaluate me so that I could grow up. However, I also let him know that if he could speak in love so that I may be encouraged. That would build up one another. Because it was hard to swallow as someone gave you a comment immediately, it had a good intention.
Due to the Truth of Love (1 Cor 13:4-6), we will improve this area in our communication in a long run.
At least I may realize where the area of mine is needs to improve so that we can maintain the relationship or love each other more and more.

Thanks Jesus...
